Our first stop on the North Island: New Zealand's capitol city of Wellington!
Welly has a reputation for being windy and rainy, and while my guidebook tried to claim that neither reputation is all that deserved, it definitely lived up to its reputation at times during our visit.
Still, we had a fantastic couple of days, eating out at a restaurant called "Mexico" (which probably sounds as exotic and exciting here as a restaurant called "Fiji" would sound in the States) and indulging in plum margaritas...
...staying at the awesomely quirky apartment (google "skybox" if you're interested) of a fellow Madagascar PCV who unfortunately was out of town for the weekend but fortunately was willing to let SR and I crash his place all the same...
...checking out the fun and funky Cuba Street...
...wandering Welly's farmer's market, which actually exclusively sells things grown on farms (! how novel!)...
...and, as the skies cleared for a glorious afternoon, enjoying a stroll through the town center...
...and along its waterfront promenade.
We will definitely be passing back through Welly to return to the South Island in May, and depending on how things play out, we might get to make another visit of a night or two. But regardless, it was a great intro to a really sweet city.
