Catlins

From Te Anau, we did a sweep to the south of the South Island, through Invercargill to the lovely Catlins area. We stayed in the village of Curio Bay, which has this amazing petrified forest beach.

And then, after the sun set over the tide pools...

...the beach got EVEN BETTER: a couple of rare yellow-eyed penguins climbed out of the water and obligingly posed for pictures until it was too dark to see much anymore.

We also made a Catlins stop at Nugget Point, with its sweet lighthouse...

...sweeping coastal views...

...and all kinds of fun friends nearby.
