This trip: a long time coming

Since traveling and my nieces and nephews top my list of the best things in life, I’ve long been looking forward to taking the kiddos on the road. Since they were little, I’ve told them that when they are old enough (a vague benchmark that their parents set at 18) I would take them each anywhere in the world that they wanted to go. I vividly remember my niece R, the eldest of the four siblings, walking with me around Denver when she was about six years old (and would come up from where my sister lived in the ‘burbs to spend overnights with me at “OUR city apartment,” as she deemed it) telling me that for our someday trip, she’d decided on Paris…but she wasn’t sure yet if it would be Paris, France, or Paris, Texas.

Now that little munchkin is a brave, passionate 19-year-old, and in the end she changed her mind and chose—for her first time out of the US—to come to Egypt. This is also my first time back in North Africa since I lived in Morocco for a year, more than two decades ago, and it feels wonderful. So here we are, pinching ourselves to try to make it feel real that we are actually here together. Enjoy the next two weeks of pictures from Egypt. We kicked things off with a bang, our first day being at the pyramids in Giza….and then some!
