Wave Rock

From the south coast, we headed inland (signs indicated that we were officially entering the Australian bush, but after all that driving across the Nullarbor, it seemed crazy to only drive three hours from the coast and be in the bush) to the mildly famous outback sight of Wave Rock.

It's just one side of the larger Hyden outcrop, which is very similar to Enchanted Rock near Austin (shout-out to HP and KP!). Pretty cool formation, though, and hard to get a sense of the scale without people in the picture, so let's try it again with SR and me in the shot:

We walked a bit around the area, appreciating a couple types of Australia's amazingly colorful, diverse birds...

...and hippos! (Not really, but do you see the open hippo mouth in the rock? The promoters of this tourist draw are counting on it!)

It startled me, after all the cool, coastal weather we've had on the trip so far, to be eager to get back into the van and turn on the air conditioning after this walk. Just the tiniest taste of the much more extensive outback adventures that are to come a bit later in the trip.
