Omarama

From Fairlie, SR and I headed south across the mountainous spine of the south island of New Zealand. The glacial lakes we drove past were completely spectacular...

...as was the scenery along the 55km dead-end road to Mt. Cook, the highest peak in the country.

At the end of the road, the morning's rain was still lingering, so rather than seeing Mt. Cook itself, we had to settle for the sight of where it hid, behind the clouds.

But by late afternoon, when we made it to our evening's accommodations at a sheep and cattle station north of Omarama, the sun was shining brilliantly upon our Merino friends.

Before the day was done, we also took an awesome walk into the clay cliffs just outside of Omarama, just a hint of what we hope will be much hiking to come.
